How do you like your musicals: sweet or sour?
That’s the question everyone is asking around Broadway these days, as two very different shows go toe to toe for the highly coveted Tony Award for Best Musical, which will be given out on June 9.
Out in front by a nose is Kinky Boots, which earned 13 nominations; right behind is Matilda with 12.
Matilda comes to us with the Royal Shakespeare Company pedigree attached and a long, flowing list of British awards and critical cheers from both sides of the pond. It’s based on one of those humorously dark tales by Roald Dahl, this one about a young girl who loves to read, which is her only joy in the face of loveless parents and a ogre-run school.
Kinky Boots is based on a 2005 British film about a shoe factory in the North of England that’s about to go broke until it switches from making sober men’s shoes to creating outrageous footwear for drag queens.
