The Boston Red Sox are coming off a good year in the 2016 MLB season. After winning the 2013 World Series, the Red Sox posted a 93 win season and placed first in the American League East in the 2016 MLB Season. However the Red Sox were swept by the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division Series. Look for the Red Sox to continue that success in the 2017 MLB season and make a run at the MLB playoffs again and the 2017 World Series.
Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, around 1908, following the lead of previous teams that had been known as the “Boston Red Stockings”.
The Boston Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won eight World Series championships and have played in 12 over the years. Boston Red Sox defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 and won four more championships by 1918. The “Curse of the Bambino” is alleged to begin with the Red Sox’ sale of Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees two years after their world championship in 1918 (the Red Sox had an 86-year wait before the team won its sixth World Championship in 2004). Following their victory in the 2013 World Series, they became the first team to win three World Series trophies in the 21st century, including championships in 2004 and 2007.
The Houston Astros had a 84 game winning 2016 MLB season. The Astros finished 3rd in the American League West and failed to make the MLB Playoffs. The Astros are looking to improve that record for the 2017 MLB season and make a stong run at the MLB Playoffs.
In 1965, the MLB saw the birth of the Houston Astros. Although the team was started three years earlier they were known then as the Houston Colt .45s. The Astros were the first team to play indoors by constructing the Astrodome which allowed baseball fans to sit in AC rather than the stifling heat of the Texas sun.
In 1979, the State of Texas was introduced to Nolan Ryan. After a decade of losing seasons Ryan brought two consecutive MLB playoffs seasons his first two years. He is arguably the best pitcher to play for the Houston Astros. Ryan set many records over his career including the record for most no-hitters thrown (only the third pitcher to throw no-hitters in both leagues) and broke the all-time strikeout record. The Houston Astros had his #34 retired in 1996.
In 2000, the Astros saw the end of an era with the Astrodome. The team moved into the brand-new Minute Maid Park. The park features a retractable roof and when closed the facility can be air conditioned. The stadium seats around 42,000 Astros fans on game day.
The Houston Astros two most recognizable names, one was known as the greatest Houston Astros player of all time, played for the team in the 90’s. Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell were their names and they were known as the “Killer B’s”. Bagwell won the MVP in 1994 and finished his career as the Houston Astros career leader in home runs, RBIs, walks, sacrifice flies and intentional walks.
The Astros play in the American League West with the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. They have won one National League pennant in 2005.
